Front pageTwice every month, Whales online presents a significant current event related to the St. Lawrence. 26 June 2008 Rivière-du-Loup's Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent opens its doorsOn June 15, ROMM, a non-profit organization whose mission is to highlight and protect the St. Lawrence and its fauna, inaugurated the Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent situated in Rivière-du-Loup's Parc de la Pointe. The inauguration of the Station also marked ROMM's 10th anniversary. Inside, various aspects of marine biodiversity are revealed, including the shoreline and its inhabitants, seabirds, whales and seals. A temporary photographic exhibit entitled “The Creatures of the St. Lawrence” by Thierry Gosselin has been set up while the permanent exhibition on the secrets of the undersea world is being prepared, to be unveiled in 2009. ROMM director Esther Blier is pleased to expose the collection of marine mammal and seabird skeletons to the general public. The Station also houses an experimental laboratory, an outdoor observation station and a gift shop. Biologists offer interpretation activities, leading visitors, young and old, to the shoreline to teach them about the St. Lawrence, a natural legacy worth protecting. The Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent will be open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day from June 15 to October 13, 2008. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $12.00 for a family. Special rates are also offered depending on age and group size. Profits generated will be re-invested in ROMM's learning, public awareness and educational activities. ROMM's new Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent is the latest in a series of learning centres administered by various groups to highlight the St. Lawrence. Exploramer, located at Saint-Anne-des-Monts, is a centre that offers activities to raise public awareness about the importance of conservation and the acknowledgement of the maritime portion of the St. Lawrence in the environment. MICS (Mingan Island Cetacean Study) opened the doors to its Education Research Station and Interpretation Centre in 1992 at Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan to inform visitors about research work carried out at the station. Finally, the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre (CIMM) in Tadoussac is the focal reference and news centre for St. Lawrence whales.
